Give that tree that has brightened up your holidays the gift of another useful life. Trees that are collected in the free county-wide holiday tree recycling program are chipped for landscaping mulch or used as fuel to generate electricity.
Holiday trees will be picked up at the curb from garbage service customers early in the morning on regular collection day during the week of January 2 through 6 throughout most of Santa Cruz County. Curbside collection of trees in the City of Watsonville will be during the week of January 9 through 13, 2012. The curbside collection period is extended in some jurisdictions.
Before recycling a tree, residents should remove all ornaments, tinsel, and any metal or plastic stands. For curbside collection, residents should cut larger trees to a 6 food length. In the unincorporated county, trees need to be cut to 3 foot lengths for curbside pickup. No flocked trees are accepted.
Curbside collection of trees for businesses and apartments is available in some areas. Your local garbage hauler can provide information about pickup options.
Special bins for collecting trees are placed at many fire stations and other convenient locations around the County. These bins will be available for residents to drop off their trees from December 26, 2011 through January 15, 2012.
